CAMP R.E.W.A.R.D. - July 2003
(Realizing Excellence With Attention Redirection
and Desensitization)
3 Day Camp
We had a great group for the 2nd Camp R.E.W.A.R.D.
We had a nice mix of people and dogs; a Catahoula Leopard
dog, a Mastiff, a Norwegian Elkhound mix, a Great Dane/Pit
mix, an Australian Shepherd, and an All American. It was
split for who was aggressive to people and/or dogs.
- Trainer of the day for Wednesday went to Karen
Luzzi – Xeres (pronounced Zeres) was
phenomenal!
- Trainer of the day for Thursday went to Daphne
King and Sadie – Sadie was learning
that Daphne really is the best thing since
sliced bread!
- Trainer of the day for Friday went to Deette
Evans and Lexi – Lexi was doing a great
job paying attention to Deette, as well as
loose leash walking on a regular collar!
We had a very busy 3 days: Desensitization took on the
form of Free shaping, loose leash walking, sits,
downs, attention, swimming, Rally, door etiquette and tricks.
The few growly incidents we had were quite minimal
and ended quickly. I was proud of all of the humans – everyone
remained cool and calm and we practiced the breathing
exercises every chance we could. We even fit in
a relaxing solitary walk (no dogs) on the Paulinskill trail.
In only three days, all of the dogs went from “yeah,
whatever, I am busy,” to focusing their attention
on their owners with mild distractions, responding
to cues MUCH faster and above all, practicing to NOT aggress!
