All I ever wanted to know about Camp R.E.W.A.R.D.
but was afraid to ask:

What is Camp R.E.W.A.R.D.?
Camp R.E.W.A.R.D. is a 3 or 5 day camp/seminar for owners and their aggressive, reactive or shy dogs.

What training methods are used at Camp R.E.W.A.R.D.?
Positive methods only are used at the camp. Prong collars, choke chains, head halters, yelling, jerking, etc., will not be allowed at Camp R.E.W.A.R.D. The positive methods used have been proven to be the best methods for dealing with aggressive dogs.

What behaviors will my dog need to know before coming to Camp R.E.W.A.R.D.?
The short list:

  • Eye contact with you – even amidst distractions (or as best as you can)
  • Name response – amidst distractions (or as best as you can)
  • “Come” word response amidst distractions (or as best as you can)
  • Door etiquette
  • Walk on a loose leash
  • Sit and down
  • Stay
  • Crate training – dogs must feel comfortable in a crate in your vehicle. These dogs are all aggressive and the safest place for your dog is in a crate in your car/van. In addition, it is cooler for your dog to be in a crate – that way you can safely keep the doors and windows open in hot weather, while you are waiting your turn. I may bend on the fluency of the other behaviors on this list, but not on crate training.

Why are these basic behaviors needed for camp?
Without these simple basic behaviors, we cannot work on the aggression issues with your dog. If your dog isn’t focused on you, he will have no choice but to focus on his own particular provoking stimuli.

What can I expect to learn at Camp R.E.W.A.R.D.?
How to set up a personalized and positive desensitization program, with exercises you will learn at camp. How to NOT be your dog’s worst nightmare and how to set your dog up to succeed (ie: not aggress).

What will we be doing at camp?
The short list:

  • Classroom time every day
  • Two sessions per day working with your dog (more if we can)
  • Diane Mayer, MSW will be coming in to talk about the human side of your team and how we can change our reactions to our dogs reactions (when available)
  • Tracking with Dr. Karen Dashfield, DVM (when available)
  • Rally Obedience
  • Free shaping/tricks
  • Freestyle (dancing with your dog)
  • Swimming – dogs and humans – weather permitting
  • Hiking (on an easy trail – no hills)

Please understand that every group is a little different in terms of skills of the dogs, skills of the handlers and as such, the abovementioned activities may be changed, modified, added to or deleted.
