FAQs about training:

  • What is Positive Reinforcement Training? One of the most common misconceptions about positive training is that all we do is throw cookies around and hope for the behavior to miraculously happen! This couldn't be farther from the truth. What I am actually doing is manipulating the consequences for the animal to get the kinds of behaviors I want. [Learn more]
  • What is Clicker Training? Clicker training is one facet of positive training that uses a marker signal (also called a secondary reinforcer or bridge) to tell the dog that he did something right. [learn more]
  • Common Misconceptions

    • The clicker is a fad or gimmick...
    • The scientific principles behind clicker training are too difficult for the average person to learn and understand...
    • Training using positive reinforcement takes much longer than traditional punishment based training...
    • In training, a dog should never be given a choice...
    • Clicker training is too difficult because you must always have the clicker with you...Clicker trained dogs won’t work without food...
    • Behaviors taught using the clicker aren’t as reliable as behaviors taught using force...
    • Clicker training won’t work for behavior problems like barking or aggression. [Answers]

The Black and White Club: The video clips below are from what I call the Black and White Club. It is a walking group where some of my students and I get together and walk our dogs off leash in safe areas. Sometimes we just have a few dogs, sometimes a large crowd. Anyone is welcome to join us as long as your dog is good with other dogs, you have good off leash control (or you can start with leash dragging) and comes when called.

The Black and White Club Thanksgiving Walk
Comment from a YouTube viewer: This video made me feel so happy! I took my dogs on a "pack walk" a few months ago (the name alone should have made me realize it was a bad idea). Instead of hearing "good boy", "good dog", whistling, "yay!" and seeing treats being given out as shown in your video, there were constantly people screaming "no", "get over here", "stop that", and zaps from e-collars being given out to non-compliant dogs. Your walk seemed like a ton of fun for the dogs. The "pack walk" was a stressful experience. [Contact Pam for info on having a fun walk experience]
